Christmas Loss

James Brown died
So did Gerald Ford
So did a sister
what do you do when someone dies at Christmas?

People died on the TV screen yesterday
They were in Africa
but also in our living room

and tears rolled down my face
in a season when i can't cry

it's the helplessness of it
the fact that you can't change the day
you can't change the happening at all
you can't give your breaths to her
your tears don't have salt enough to be smelling salts to death
